Here is a deck that I have used to present and demonstrate Lotus Connections.

The deck is split into three areas:

1. Potential

2. Practicality

3. Reality

Potential looks at what can be achieved using Social Software tools. This section is delivered as a story of my work day flying to Wellington NZ for a customer presentation

Practicality goes into feature function land by demonstrating lots of product features in the form of different usage scenarios e.g. finding expertise, finding colleagues with a common interest etc – all these demonstrations are delivered using pre-built videos.

Reality looks at how you actually deliver all the capabilities discussed including deployment options and support statements.

If you want to get hold of the original then please let me know at chris_sparshott@nz1.ibm.com

In order for better integration between enterprise applications and user interfaces e.g.Intranets I believe we will need a product that maintains a list of the social software applications that our employees interact with including their external userids and passwords.

The advantage to the organisation is that they could then build widgets and fragments that we could place within the UI of any application to allow access to these external social software applications in the context of the activity that the employee is performing – this assumes that the organisation finds value in employees interacting with social software sites.

The social software discovery service would be an extension to the pre-exiting corporate directory ie. the the external corporate directory. We would need to map corporate user id against external user ids similar to some SSO soultions.

If employees didn’t sign-up to the discovery service and provide their userids and passwords for these accounts the organisation could block access to them from work using security services such as Facetime. (this raises some ethical issues about corporate access to employees digital profiles, this is disucussed in Profile 2.0 – more on that later)

I am engaged with a number of businesses around New Zealand helping them understand, implement and prove the value of Social Networking and collaboration for their organisations.

When we look at providing metrics which prove the value we are limited to a few possible areas:

1. Critical Business Process

2. Collaboration Business Process

3. Measuring Contribution

1. Critical Business Process (ROI)

An identified business process is measurable in terms of time to execute, resources and costs. By implementing social networking tools we are looking to modify the business process to make it execute faster, with less errors, and less cost.

2. Collaboration Business Process (Time and effort)

We identify a business process that is not effective. An example of this would be where a team of 6 remotely dispersed colleagues are working on a document. In this scenario the only collaboration available to them is email. As a team member makes a change on the document it is emailed around the team. Then one of the other colleagues makes a change and the document is again emailed around the team. etc etc The team has to employ the services of an office admin to compile the changes at the end of the day and send the compiled list of changes to the team.

lots of email and lots of wasted time!!

Social Networking and Collaboration tools can address this problem and so improve collaborative business processes.

3. Measuring Contribution (RoC)

measuring Contribution is the focus of a presentation I have shared on slideshare. I have included the show below.

Measuring Social Software

View more presentations from Chris Sparshott. (tags: value business)

This summarises my three ways of proving the value of Social networking and collaboration tools.
