I am a resent member of the My Metaverse community on Ning. While surfing around this site I came across some information about Wirtland.
“Wirland claims to be the world’s first sovereign internet-based country”
A sovereign state? The problem here is that A sovereign state is usually one that is recognised by other Sovereign states. So if World of Warcraft, Facebook, MySpace set themselves up as Sovereigns stats and recognised Wirtland then maybe there would be more to it!
Wirtland also claims to be able to give our marriage certificates, identity cards, etc. It claims that the reason people join Wirtland is to have a greater degree of “Self-identifiaction”. I translate this to mean join a community – period. To Me Witland is a Massively Multiplayer Real-life role-playing Game (MMRLRPG) rather than a MMORPG such as World of Warcraft and SecondLife (although I may get critisied for called Secondlife a game) but I think comparisions can be made between the two.
I hope that Wirtland citizens join together to create positive expereinces for themselves and the world but this may not be the case, time will tell. When I think about negative local groups that have their own rules and regulations but also run within a sovereign state I think of the Biker Gangs of New Zealand.
I have included a video of the “Haka” scene from “Once we were Warriors” a movie all about the lives of those people living within the Biker Gang community.
Perhaps Wirtland is just another “gang”?…but maybe Facebook is just another Gang and Bebo and LinkedIn…

Thank you for your interest in Wirtland, Chris. In our opinion, Wirtland is not a game, and people are not actually playing roles. Anyway, Wirtland is at baby stage, and we’ll see how it grows. All opinions and discussion are always welcome. You may sign up anytime at http://witizens.ning.com. As Wirtland will become your country, you can start an activity of your choice: from a critique blogging to a presidential campaign

Hi Cris,
I am intrigued by the whole idea of Wirtland. To challenge an individuals notion of Country, State, and Religion is not easy. Surely country is really the same as ‘Church” a group of people working together with similar goals and similar ideals.
Wirtland seems like a community of such people but to use the terms, country, sovereign etc implies some sort of reality that currently doesn’t exist – I say this because a Sovereign state has to be recognised by other Sovereign states in order to be a Sovereign state. Is Wirtland recognised as such by anyone other than the participants of the community?
However, I could have it all wrong! When Wirtland becomes the most powerful state in the world I will be eating my words!

Hi Cris,
Apologies for the sites, its new and the theme needs tweaking. I might back this out and put in a more stable theme.
Thank you for sharing the link but the Order of Malta is supported by the most powerful Christian tradition on earth, it also has a history of performing great acts for 100s of years.
If Wirtland residents have support equally as powerful and are recognised the world over of providing value to humanity and the world then Wirtland may be in with a chance. (in my humble opinion)
